In real life history[]
The word "pantechnicon" was invented in the 1830s as the name of a bazaar in the Belgravia area of London. The bazaar was closed soon after opening and became a furniture repository. The building burned down in 1874.[1]
Trivia[]
Gail chose, in her head, to put the Pantechnicon at 87-135 Brompton Road London SW1X 7XL, which is now Ladurée (Harrods) because she likes macarons.
Quotes[]
- “The Pantechnicon stored and distributed a good deal of furniture as well. The very idea of a lady of good breeding visiting such a place. There would be tables lying about, on their sides, naked! Not to mention flaccid dirigibles! Alexia shuddered at the very idea.” (Heartless, Chapter Twelve)
